In this drill you will mark yourself based on 3 factors of the golf shot. The height, the shape and where it lands, all controllables in the golf shot.
Starting with a dead straight, medium height ball which lands on target. This shot will be the ‘middle’ of the grid and the marking shot to judged all other shots on.
Now put 2 markers about 10 yards in front of the ball, 1 foot apart from each other, either side of the target line.
The next shot can be any of the other 9 shots. As an example, the medium draw should be the same height as your marker shot. It should start outside the right-hand marker and finish in the same spot as the marker shot. (opposite for a lefty)
Repeat this shot 5 times give a point in each catagory (height, shape, landing spot) for each that you achieve.
Now try a high draw. Using the same idea as the medium draw, this time increasing the peak height/launch angle of the ball. If there is a visible difference in peak height of this ball from the medium flight, give a point. also give a point for the shape and landing zone. Again, repeat this 5 times and score for each shot in each category, ensuring you are honest with the scoring.
Complete the grid by hitting 5 shots of each of the 3 shapes and 3 heights of shot. (draw/straight/fade, low/medium/high). Ensure they all finish in the landing zone, changes in height are clear and draws/fades start outside the markers.
At the end of this drill you will have a score out of 5 for the height, shape and landing zone of each shot. This will highlight the weak shape and height, showing you which shot needs working on.
Being able to control the shape and height of the golf ball is very beneficial on the golf course. Going over trees, under trees, around trees, over bunkers, attacking flags and fighting the wind. Knowing what your golf ball is going to do in the air will help to get out of some awkward situations on the golf course.
